On a shocking morning of 20th August 2025, a civilian who reached Delhi all the way from Rajkot, Gujarat, assaulted the Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta. The accused reached the CM residence in Delhi and approached to talk to her in the public hearing. As reported by the authorities, the accused first approached the CM to talk to her regarding his grievances and handing some papers which is when is assaulted her. This attack towards such reputed and public figures has now raised a concern over political violence and has up roared a widespread condemnation.
What really happened?
As per the news sources, on the pretext of handling some papers to the CM, the man suddenly started screaming at her and then slapped her due to which the CM fell on the ground and went under utter shock. He was caught by the security forces at that time and was later taken to the civil lines police station for investigation. The man who committed the violence is reportedly, Rajesh bhai Khambhat Zakariya, a 41 year old man from Rajkot, Gujarat.
Why did the attack happen?
The mother of the accused, Bhanu Khimji Sakriya, reported to the police that his son, Rajesh bhai was extremely upset with the recent Supreme Court’s reply on the relocation of the street dogs of Delhi. His mother further stated that he is an extreme animal lover and he despised the unjustified court statement on the relocating stray dogs of Delhi. She informed the reporter that Sakriya was not involved with any political party and was the kind of person who advocated the animal rights.
After the police undertook the accused under investigation, FIR was filed against him for attempting to murder, assault towards public servant and obstructing public servant. CM of Delhi, Rekha Gupta took it to her X account and shared,
What does the investigation say?
On further detailed investigation by the police, it was reported that Sakriya has had past criminal records with cases including drunken misconduct and physical violence. His mother’s statement on his habit of hitting his wife and his family members thereby proved that his psychological state is under scrutiny. The political parties namely AAP and Congress stood against this violence and condemned this attack. Public works department (PWD) minister, Parvesh Verma further stated that the Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta is now suffering hand, shoulder and head injury and is in a sudden shock but will recover soon.
On reports compiled by C2C leadership, the special cell is now under taking the further investigation of the cases to understand the real reason behind the attack by Sakriya, the cell is also checking all the CCTV footages near the place of attack and also the call records of Sakriya to decode the planning of the attack. The people whom Sakriya contacted prior to the day of attack are being investigated as well.
Conclusion
This physical attack on CM Rekha Gupta has now raised a security concern for public figures. Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has assigned tight security around the CM under the Z-grade protection. However, Rekha Gupta’s reply on the attack and her surety of returning back to the ground as soon as she recovers has provided relief to the civilians. The collective condemnation of this physical violence towards the CM has reaffirmed that violence should not have any place within a democratic country like India. CM Rekha Gupta will continue holding her public meetings and will soon return on ground to propagate the idea that such attacks do not hinder her spirit.
