After hearing about poor Anjel Chakma getting killed in Dehradun just ’cause some idiots threw racial slurs at him and it turned deadly, it really makes you think about how bad it still is in places like Delhi. I’ve talked to friends from the Northeast living there, and bro, the stories are nonstop – slurs, weird looks, landlords saying no, all that crap. It’s like they gotta prove they’re Indian every day.

That Nido Taniam Case Everyone Still Talks About
Back in 2014, this 19-year-old Arunachal guy Nido got mocked for his hair in Lajpat Nagar market, called “chinky” and stuff, he reacted, and a mob beat him so bad he died. Huge protests everywhere, Rahul Gandhi showed up, they even set up the Bezbaruah Committee to fix racism issues. Delhi got a special police unit for Northeast complaints after that, and things chilled a bit, but not really fixed.
COVID Turned It Up To Eleven
2020-2021 was nightmare level. Northeast folks got called “coronavirus,” “Chinese,” spat on, kicked out of flats, denied rickshaws or shops. In Delhi, girls got harassed bad, one Manipuri woman spat at and yelled “corona” at. Reports said Delhi had like 64% of verbal abuse cases against them. Landlords evicted people left and right ’cause of the looks. Helplines blew up, but cops often didn’t do much.

The Everyday Bullshit
Even now, it’s constant – “momo,” “chowmein,” “chinki” on the street, trouble finding rooms ’cause landlords got stereotypes about food smells or partying. Women get extra harassment, like assumptions they’re easy. Studies say hundreds of cases over years in Delhi, but most don’t report ’cause police brush it off as “small fight.” Places like Munirka or Humayunpur got big Northeast communities, but still feel unsafe.
No Big New Killings Lately, But The Hate’s There
Thank god no fresh murder like Nido in Delhi recently that blew up, but the discrimination? Still real. With Anjel’s case now, everyone’s linking it back, saying we need that anti-racism law the Bezbaruah report asked for ages ago. Politicians promise special units like Delhi’s in other places, more awareness in schools about the Northeast.

It’s messed up, ya know? These guys are Indians, serving in army, studying hard, contributing, but treated like outsiders. Makes me angry. Stay safe if you’re out there in Delhi, Northeast brothers and sisters.
