Yesterday, on this April 9, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke from the heart. He said reservation for women in our Parliament and state assemblies isn’t just some political idea – it’s the need of the hour. He wrote a warm, personal article and even recorded a video message, calling all of us to pay attention. He put it so beautifully: the nation is upright at the threshold of a Momentous occasion. This is our chances to make our democracy deeper, powerful, and unbiased.

Modi ji didn’t talk like a politician giving a speech. He spoke like someone who genuinely believes that when our mothers, sisters, daughters and wives get their rightful place in law-making, the whole country moves forward. He said describing this as just another bill would be too small. This is about the dreams and ambition of crores of Indian women.
Back in 2023, Parliament proceed the Women’s Reservation Act – 33% seats for women in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabhas. It was linked to a future division after the 2027 census, meaning it might have taken many more years. Now the government is saying – no more waiting. They want this to start from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. For that, they’re bringing fresh amendments.
The Budget session is being extended. From April 16 to 18, both houses will sit specially to discuss and hopefully pass this. Lok Sabha seats will increase from 543 to 816, and one-third of them – around 273 – will be for women. Same formula in states. They’ll use 2011 census data for redrawing constituencies so we don’t have to wait. And yes, SC and ST women will also get their fair share within this.
Modi ji explained the deeper reason. Women are already shining everywhere – in education, business, sports, defence, science, you name it. Their benefaction is huge. Yet when it comes to making the laws that influence our daily lives, their voice is still not as brawny as it should be.
He recall us that our Constitution always wanted true equality, not just on paper. For years, many governments tried but couldn’t cross the line. In 2023, when the bill finally passed, Modi ji said it was one of the most emotional moments of his life. Now he’s urging everyone – every party, every MP – to come together next week and finish the job. No politics, just unity for something bigger than everybody’s.
He directly spoke to women: “Please read what’s written and share it with others.” He appealed to all of us to seize this moment with responsibility. India has always shown that on national issues, we can rise above differences. This is one such time.
Imagine them seeing women leaders in Parliament and assemblies as something normal, not rare. Imagine laws being made by people who understand the challenges of balancing work and home, of safety on streets, of girls’ education. That changes everything.

Of course, some details will need careful handling – how the rotation of seats will work, making sure it stays fair. But the direction feels right. Delaying it further would only keep that old imbalance alive. Modi ji said we owe it to our Nari Shakti to strengthen our democracy.
They merit a real seat at the table where decisions are taken. Not as a favour, but as their right. When half the population gets proper representation, the whole nation breathes better.
Everyone’s keep an eye on April 16. If our leaders show the unity that Modi ji is asking for, this could become one of those moments we’ll proudly tell the next generation about. It’s not just about numbers or seats. It’s about respect. It’s about progress.
