Bihar politics just took another wild turn today, and it’s the kind that makes you sit up and go, Nitish Kumar, our longtime Chief Minister, the personality who’s basically been the face of Bihar governance for over 20 years, actually went ahead and signed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha this morning.

Patna’s buzzing, and Nitish shows up at the Bihar Legislative Assembly to file his papers. Right there with him? Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Deputy CMs Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Sinha, and even BJP national president Nitin Nabin doing his own filing.
It was a full-on NDA family photo moment. Nitish was the first to sign and hand over his form to the Assembly secretary. No drama, just straightforward, but man, the implications are huge.
He’d already posted on X earlier, pouring his heart out in that classic Nitish style. He said something like, there’s always been this “desire in my heart” to be part of both Houses in Bihar’s legislature and both in Parliament. He’s ticked off MLA, MLC, even Lok Sabha back in the day—but Rajya Sabha? That was the missing piece. Now he’s completing the full set at 75. Kinda poetic, right? Like closing a chapter on his own terms.
We all know this isn’t just about checking a box. Nitish got promised in for his record 10th term as CM just four months ago, after the NDA crushed it in the 2025 assembly polls. That’s not random. The vibe from insiders and reports is that this is a planned handoff.
The BJP’s finally getting its shot at putting a full-fledged BJP Chief Minister in Bihar for the first time ever. Names like Samrat Chaudhary or maybe even someone like Nityanand Rai are being whispered as the next in line. Nitish himself said the new government will have his “full cooperation and guidance,” so he’s not disappearing—he’s just moving to Delhi, staying in the game from the Rajya Sabha benches, probably keeping an eye on things.
The opposition’s having a field day with this. RJD and Tejashwi’s camp are calling it everything from a “coup” to a straight-up betrayal of the mandate. Some folks are even saying it’s the BJP pulling the strings after the big win. JD(U) workers outside his place looked shell-shocked at first—like, is this real? But Amit Shah was all praise, calling Nitish’s time in office a “golden chapter” with no blemishes. High praise from the Home Minister himself.

At the end of the day, Bihar’s politics has always been this mix of loyalty, strategy, and surprise switches. Nitish wrote the playbook on that. Whether it’s health, timing, or smart alliance math, this feels like him nodding out gracefully while make sure his party and the NDA stay strong. The Rajya Sabha polls are on March 16, so this will be known soon if it’s all smooth sailing.
